ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON | NICOLAS JAIS-NIELSEN

For this painting, we can see a contrast between the “good side”, using rather warm colors ; and the dragon, made with cold colors.
Although both characters are easily recognisable, the various parts of St George’s and his horse’s bodies are split, so that it is not easy for the eye of the observer to understand exactly where they are and which part belongs to what.
As a result the observer’s eye is wandering from one place of the painting to the other trying to try to understand the morphology of the characters, which brings movement in the scene.
The fluorescent yellow is always important in my paintings.
Here, it is used for the face and part of the body of St George as well as for a small part of the horse belly, which is in fact the center of the painting, giving it the necessary balance.
There is also some yellow on the bottom left which, I don’t know exactly why, but which could be some divine energy helping St. George in his difficult task.
Finally, a word on the dragon which is so explicit with its head that I tried to bring some confusion in shaping its body to give movement to the circonvolution of its snaky tale.
